Reading Test

5 Tips for the Reading Test

#1: Pay special attention to the word limit and stick to it
This may sound obvious, but many candidates fail to be aware of this. If it says, 'No more than one word/ number,' it means simply that.

Do not write two words or more, no matter how tempted you are.

#2: When the question states, 'You may use more than one option twice/ more than once,' it means simply that you CAN and SHOULD use some options twice/ more than once
This instruction in the question, should be a prompt reminder and wake you up to the possibility and necessity of repeating certain answers.

#3: Your focus should be on locating the answers in the passage and NOT reading the passage word for word

Although the IELTS component states 'Reading', that is the last thing you should be doing for that section. Instead, you should be skimming and scanning for information, so as to tackle the questions given. Simply put, you may not understand certain sections or words in the passage, but remember, you are not reading for 100% understanding, but more so, reading to answer questions.

#4:  Always read the questions first before looking at the passage
Also, you should read only ONE question at a time and try to locate that relevant answer.

#5: Whenever you're in doubt, leave it out!
This means to say that if you are uncertain of a particular answer, just skip it first. You should however, put a clear indication, so that you can come back to it. Chances are, when you do return to that particular question, things will be so much clearer and the answer will even be staring you in the face.
